Mētis

Mētis is an interaction between the short experimental works of six playwrights and the continuous improvisation of six musicians.  It's an exploration of communication and miscommunication -- as indicated by the name Mētis, the Greek term for deceptive speech and appearance.

Twelve performers meet behorehand to explore the process of improvisation and discourse.  The plawrights then each prepare a short experimental piece inspired by these interactions and the theme of (mis)communication.  The writing process continues on-stage as the playwrights and musicians respond, react, and rebut one another.

The resulting interplay of word and non-word, of sound and gesture, of emotion and thought, mimics human interaction and the confusion that can sometimes arise within it.

Tin Can Telewalk

Participants follow a loose set of rules as they walk along a predetermined route, alternating between listening to each other and listening to the passing environment, all the way echoing what they hear. Tin can telephones are provided, allowing the telephone operators temporary exemption from game rules.

In this way, Tin Can Telewalk reflects our everyday lives: An accepted etiquette will apply to the public interactions but, for those interactions taking place privately, each pair will work out their own unspoken rule-system through the act of interaction itself.
